The Special Consultative Status is in recognition of its mandate to propagate and perpetuate the memory of one of the greatest statesmen scientists of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam who served with distinction as the President of India, (from 2002 to 2007). During its existence for the last five years, the Kalam Smriti has become an internationally recognised Non- Governmental Organisation dedicated to the ideas and ideals of Dr. Kalam and devoting its energies to areas like peace, education, environment, science and technology, rural development and health, which were close to his heart.

The UN devised the system of consultative status for deserving NGOs with ECOSOC to fulfil the promise of the UN in its Charter that the UN would be an organisation of “We the people” and not merely an inter-governmental organisation. To be eligible for consultative status, an NGO must be recognised by the host country, have a democratically-adopted constitution, authority to speak for its members, a representative structure. Apart from organising discussions, workshops, international conferences, the Smriti has established a Dr.Kalam Smriti International Excellence Award for global leaders. The Awards have been conferred so far on Presidents and Prime Ministers of Maldives, Mauritius and Bangladesh. The Kalam Smriti Science and Space Museum was also visited by many leaders including the Prime Minister of Nepal.
